Dressing Up

Now that we’re well into Winter and Xmas is looming on the horizon, these chilly mornings and colder evenings call for a change of wardrobe. My Summer jacket has been put away and I get to take out my thick, Winter coat. I even remembered to take my Winter coat to the dry cleaners before the weather took a turn for the significantly cooler, which is rare for me.

In the Summer months I usually wear a flat cap, living up to some Northern stereotype I’m sure. Come Winter though, I have a few warmer woollen hats that have mostly been
bought from Finnish market stalls. Some are long and Smurf-like but my current hat of choice is a green, striped beanie type hat. I have even been known to wear a scarf, which isn’t something I’ve always done – maybe it’s a sign of getting older, or maybe Winters have just got colder.

Growing Gourds

Now the nights are getting dark… the mornings are dark… ahh, lets face it – now it’s October it’s dark most of the time.  The greenhouse is not the warm refuge it used to be anymore, now it’s a cold and damp corner of the garden with a few tomatoes and a couple of persistent chilli-peppers in it.  I haven’t planted a great deal of Winter veggies so things are gradually winding down outside.  My gourds are doing well still, hopefully they can be dried out and turned into something decorative for Halloween.  As my trowel is put away for now, I think I’ll dust off my sewing box and thumb through my pattern books in case there’s something worth rustling up in time for Christmas.

There Goes The Sun

Now that we’re almost into October, the weather is a lot colder and things in the garden are starting to wilt. The water melons are a write off (always a bit of a long shot) and have shrivelled up. What’s left is now a spider house as the dried up stems seem to be a convenient place to weave webs. On the plus side, I’ve still got radishes and tomatoes that are looking healthy so there’s a few more edible things that are surviving the changing temperature. I would also have expected my chilli peppers to have been wiped out by the cold but they’re flowering nicely. Not sure if I’ll get any actual peppers from there but hope springs eternal etc.

Warm Winter Wool

As Winter sets in I’ve become more excited about knitting myself some wooly clothes to keep me protected from the worst of the cold this year. I’m wearing the first scarf that I made at this very moment so I’m certainly happy with that one, even though there are a few loose loops of wool here and there. I’ve started a second scarf made of chunky purple wool and that looks even better. I’ve looked over my patterns for hats and gloves and they seem a bit more difficult, but eventually I’ll have to give them a whirl. My straight loom is a permanent companion to my TV watching time, so I think I can safely say I’ve taken to this now. I Just need to pick up my work rate a bit if I’m going to make some Xmas presents as well.

…and sew on.

I had to do a bit of practical sewing today. By which I mean that I had to use buttons as buttons and not as eyes 😦 My wardrobe is in flux at the moment, it’s full of Winter gear and Spring has sprung now. My one jacket that’s light enough to wear in this warmth has some missing buttons and I’ve lost any matching spares that I had. I’ve pinched a redundant button from the lapel to sew onto the front, but I still have a pocket that I can’t fasten shut. I might take a gamble and use a button that’s the same colour but a different size and hope for the best. With the rate that I’m losing buttons on this jacket, they’ll all end up being a mismatch soon.
