Halloween at Christmas

My latest plushy little creation is called Mr. Skelly.  He’s a soft, felt skeleton-man who looks a bit like one of the characters in the Zack and Wiki video game for Nintendo Wii. I didn’t have a pattern for him, just an outline of the general shape, so I drew the pattern myself on paper. A bit of pinning later and I was able to cut out the body, arms and legs. Well, at first I cut out the front and back of the legs, but forgot that I’d need a front and back to the arms. I counted 4 pieces and in my head I thought that tallied with the number of limbs he needed. Oh well… Once I had all the right body part, putting him together was pretty easy. I gave him enough stuffing to keep him fairly firm so that he’d stand upright but still leaving him cuddly. I’ve not made any monsters out of felt before, but I’ve got a few rolls of the stuff now and I think it should give me scope to make more than just sock-shaped ones.

Here’s Ori!

Hey, hey, Ori!

Hey, hey, Ori!

These Sock Monsters are coming thick and fast!  This guy is called Ori, he’s a very simple pattern I made myself.  He’s a combination of Otis and Hoth, but he only needs one sock to make.  I didn’t give him a neck, so he’s got the ‘hunched up’ look of Ronan without being as tall as him.  In fact, being short and stocky makes him look a little like Mer-Man, the amphibian bad guy in the Masters of the Universe cartoon series.  The stripes from my socks look a little like toe nails on the end of his feet… well, I think they do…

The Barbarian

Ronan Posing

Ronan Posing

Here’s a new sock monster, he’s called Ronan.  Not after Ronan Keating, nor after Conan the Barbarian in all honesty… but after the character in Stargate Atlantis.  He’s got a tall thin body similar to Hoth but is made using the same pattern as Sidle which I think make them cousins.  His ears are long and floppy, a little like a rabbit or dreadlocks even.  He seems to enjoy zooming about the place, which is handy ‘cos he’s very aerodynamic.  He even has a few tribal tattoos from where my socks had swirl motifs on them.  Not quite sure which tribe he belongs to though…

Tooth Fairy

Now with added bite!

Now with added bite!

I’ve already got the body for my next monster cut out and stitched together.  This new creature will have big teeth, which have been made out of one of my few white socks.  I find shaping the mouth quite tricky, so adding fangs will probably be even trickier.  Oh well… fingers crossed and we’ll see how they turn out.  This monster is a bit smaller than Hoth an Otis as he’s only got little legs, but once he’s filled with stuffing he should take on a rounder shape as I’ve trimmed the length of the sock I used.  Each monster has a heart sewn onto him once he’s completed and has been given a name, but I’ve ran out of heart shaped buttons.  As luck would have it though, The Sock Mistress has found some candy coloured heart buttons on ebay, so that won’t be a problem.
