Downtime

Today I was lucky enough to have achieved that fabled, fabulous and rare thing – booked a day off from work. In reality I get as many holiday days allocated to me as the next wage slave. However, as I needed to have 3 different kinds of eye test performed on me (long story) I thought that I may as well take the whole day off from work and spend some time doing… um…

Well, that’s the question isn’t it? What to do when my time is my own? As much fun as sprawling on the sofa/in bed can be, the inactivity makes me restless. Window shopping is fun, but I buy most things online these days (Windows shopping?) but it makes a change to flick through a rack of albums or Blu Rays. Lunch with the Sock Mistress is a bonus and so much nicer than a Tupperware lunchbox of sandwiches at my office desk.

The best thing about my day off though is just taking a break from the usual routine. Being able to take a coffee break when I want to take a coffee break. Not having to see the same faces on the train, answer the same kind of questions on the phone and not having to rush through the day bound by somebody else’s ticking clock. Today I haven’t even worn a watch and there’s something slightly liberating about that.

Live On Stage

Spring is on its way and the sun is finally coming out more, even though it isn’t warm enough to go outside with no coat on yet. Yesterday the Sock Mistress and I were in town shopping when we overheard someone playing ‘I do like to be beside the seaside,’ over a crackling loudspeaker. Despite the squealing feedback, the tune was unmistakable. This immediately struck me as odd because the beach is miles away so it was strange music to be playing in the middle of a city. Upon closer investigation, it turned out that the sound was coming from a familiar looking, brightly coloured tent. It was, of course, a Punch and Judy man. It’s very rare to see a live Punch and Judy show around this neck of the woods, but it was very exciting to stumble across one. It was early in the day, so the audience wasn’t huge, but it did show that people are still drawn by the pull of Old Red Nose. I took some photos and I’ll use them as reference material for my own Punch and Judy set.

Three Corners Has My Monster

This weekend I made a little purple monster using the ‘Harry’ pattern and a few modifications. He’s got dark orange buttons for eyes and a wedge of felt for a mouth. He’s triangular, which makes him look a bit like on of the Mr. Men, but he’s certainly going to be a good buddy for Bo. Already they’ve been posing together on the back of the sofa. This latest monster is called Pascal, a name given to him by The Sock Mistress. I think the name suits him very well. I’ll make another monster using the ‘Harry’ pattern, then I’ll try something different. I’ve already drawn out the template for my next beastie, so it shouldn’t take me too long.
