Sock Monsters Never Die

A few years ago I picked up a book called ‘Stupid Sock Creatures’ by John Murphy. It was from a small book shop in Helsinki called Hobbocks, which unfortunately has since closed. It was a mixture of comic strips and sewing patterns for making strange looking monsters from old socks.

I went through a stage of transforming my old socks into aliens, which was great fun. I then picked up some gaudy patterned socks from a cheap store and made some that were nice enough to give as Christmas presents. It was good to find my rudimentary sewing skills, that I picked up when putting Iron Maiden patches on my denim jacket in the 80s/90s, were still useful.

Imagine my joy then, to see ‘The Return of the Stupid Sock Creatures’ pop up on my Amazon recommendation list under the coming soon section. More stupidity, more monsters and more cartoons! Needless to say this has been pre-ordered and will be winging its way to my door as fast as my Prime subscription can carry it.

Mr. Tree Head

The next pattern I’ve got my eye on is a tree-man with a trunk for his body and the leaves (kind of) as his hair. The brown felt I didn’t use for Squidgey will be good for his body/trunk and I’ve got some dark green felt that I can use for the hair/leaves. I’ll probably cut out felt pieces for his face, but I want to find some fruit shaped buttons to sew onto the leaves. It should make him look more like a tree, hopefully. I’ve been considering using small bells or more felt pieces but I don’t think they’d be as effective. I’ve seen strawberry shaped buttons before, but that wouldn’t look right since they don’t grow on trees. I’m hoping to end up with something that looks like it’s from Animal Crossing or Super Mario Land.

The Barbarian

Ronan Posing

Ronan Posing

Here’s a new sock monster, he’s called Ronan.  Not after Ronan Keating, nor after Conan the Barbarian in all honesty… but after the character in Stargate Atlantis.  He’s got a tall thin body similar to Hoth but is made using the same pattern as Sidle which I think make them cousins.  His ears are long and floppy, a little like a rabbit or dreadlocks even.  He seems to enjoy zooming about the place, which is handy ‘cos he’s very aerodynamic.  He even has a few tribal tattoos from where my socks had swirl motifs on them.  Not quite sure which tribe he belongs to though…

Legless

New Arrival

New Arrival

I’m using a new pattern for my next monster, though I’ve made a few change here and there.  His legs are going to become a ‘Jabba the Hutt’ style tail with a fish-like fin on the end.  Im not sure how it will turn out once he’s finished, but it’ll give him a look all of his own.  In the picture you can see my Stupid Creatures book from Hobboks and the picture of the original monster that this one is being based on.
