E3 2012

I’ve been following this year’s E3 coverage with a little less enthusiasm than previous years. Most of my gaming is done on my 3DS these days because it’s just not practical to be glued to the TV so my preferred console has to travel with me.

The only next generation console I’m likely to buy is the Wii U because I’ve got too many peripherals and Wii games already to jump to a new format. The new controller looks like fun, hopefully it wit have a better battery life than the AA hungry Wii remotes.

Since I don’t expect any of the new titles shown at E3 to land in Europe until Xmas or even later, I’m not hugely excited about the half finished demos that have been shown. For now I’ll stick with the games I’ve got and I’ll look up from my screen in a few month’s time.

You Found A Small Key

I’ve been playing the latest Legend of Zelda game on and off since it was released last year. Skyward Sword is great fun though it does owe an awful lot to Wii Sports Resort. My first Zelda game was Link to the Past, which I played on my brother’s SNES. It never really grabbed me at the time but back then I was a Sega fanboy obsessed with blue hedgehogs. Link’s Awakening on the Gameboy was the one that really made me see the light. Being on a portable system meant that I took the game with me everywhere. Ocarina of Time felt like the second coming but still to this day I find Majora’s Mask to be broken and almost unplayable. Windwaker was a highlight of the Gamecube years but Twilight Princess only ever felt like the Director’s Cut of Ocarina. There are other games in the series but I’ve either never played them or I’ve played them so little it’s not worth mentioning. Oh well, I guess that’s where the Virtual Console comes in.

Gotta Catch ’em All

I’ve been playing Pokemon games since way back in the monochrome Gameboy days (my starter for Pokemon Blue was Squirtle by the way). Whilst every subsequent edition has been basically the same game with different graphics, I still find them compulsive and fun to play. I’m a sucker for grinding in RPGs and Pokemon brings that in spades. Also, just like football stickers and POGs, the mantra of catching them all is a hard one to ignore. Once you’ve been bitten by the bug it’s very difficult to shake it off… unless you’ve stocked up on healing berries and have a Full Heal tucked away.
