Three Corners Has My Monster

This weekend I made a little purple monster using the ‘Harry’ pattern and a few modifications. He’s got dark orange buttons for eyes and a wedge of felt for a mouth. He’s triangular, which makes him look a bit like on of the Mr. Men, but he’s certainly going to be a good buddy for Bo. Already they’ve been posing together on the back of the sofa. This latest monster is called Pascal, a name given to him by The Sock Mistress. I think the name suits him very well. I’ll make another monster using the ‘Harry’ pattern, then I’ll try something different. I’ve already drawn out the template for my next beastie, so it shouldn’t take me too long.

Doodles

Taking my notebook around with me has proven to be quite useful. I did some rough sketches for templates and last night I picked my favourites, which I’ll make into monsters. The first one I’ve started on is a square shaped character with short, wide feet like a Womble but no arms. His body will be made of orange felt, but I’m not sure which buttons to use for eyes. I do have some proper googlie eyes that I could use, but I like the way buttons create more personality. They give a more ‘homemade’ look as they’re not really eyes but the way they’re placed makes your imagination see them as eyes. I’ve got plenty of chunky round buttons but something makes me think that square ones would work even better. I’m not sure, but I’ll rummage around the bottom of my sewing box and see what I can find.

Harry and Chums

Thumbing through my patterns, I’ve found a very simple one for a character called “Harry.” It’s pretty flexible so I should be able to make a few different versions. I’ve got my Moleskine notebook with me, so I can do some doodles before I pick a particular design. I’ve got an idea to make a little family of these, so I’m looking forward to this project. I might need to get some more felt squares because the ones I’ve got are more ‘Autumn’ colours and I think these should be much brighter.

Green and Leafy

Finally finished making my tree man. I used a blanket stitch to attach the two halves I’d already made, but it didn’t look quite right. As frustrating as it was, I unpicked all the stitches and started again using a tight back stitch. This time it came out looking a lot more tidy. I initially over stuffed him, so I had to take some of his filling out to keep him soft. Once I sewed up the hole at the base of his trunk he was complete and I’m very happy with him. Since he’s so top heavy he isn’t stable enough to stand upright but that doesn’t matter. I could always stand him in a plant pot, or lean him against a house plant – either would do for me. The buttons I used to decorate his leaves look perfect, so I’m very glad about those. This does of course mean that I’ve finished another monster, so I need to start thinking about what to make next. I’m going to start rummaging through my books of patterns to see what takes my fancy.

Let it snow… then snow some more

Snow Meets Sock Monster

Snow Meets Sock Monster

As we near Christmas, it’s nice to see that the weather here is being a little festive.  None of the Sockymon have had a Christmas before so they’ve been enjoying the snow and generally mucking about.  As they’re about 30% wool the cold doesn’t seem to bother them, but it does make them a little damp.  No different to us humans then really…

Wiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!

Thoot on the Wii-mote

Thoot on the Wii-mote

My latest sock monster is a toothy beast called Thoot.  He’s been trying to get to grips with playing Nintendo but he just keeps chewing the Wii-mote control.  He’s a little bit long in the tooth, but he doesn’t seem to mind.  It hasn’t stopped him from attempting to take a bite out of most of the furniture in the house.  Luckily all the other sock monsters have welcomed him into the family and they’re all getting on well with each other.  I’ve stocked up on some more buttons and extra polyester thread, so my sewing box has been fully replenished.  I guess that means that there will probably be some new additions to the gang very soon.

Tooth Fairy

Now with added bite!

Now with added bite!

I’ve already got the body for my next monster cut out and stitched together.  This new creature will have big teeth, which have been made out of one of my few white socks.  I find shaping the mouth quite tricky, so adding fangs will probably be even trickier.  Oh well… fingers crossed and we’ll see how they turn out.  This monster is a bit smaller than Hoth an Otis as he’s only got little legs, but once he’s filled with stuffing he should take on a rounder shape as I’ve trimmed the length of the sock I used.  Each monster has a heart sewn onto him once he’s completed and has been given a name, but I’ve ran out of heart shaped buttons.  As luck would have it though, The Sock Mistress has found some candy coloured heart buttons on ebay, so that won’t be a problem.
