I haven’t done anywhere near as much gardening this year as I did last year. The weather in particular has been terrible, lots of rain and very little sunshine. As such, it just hasn’t felt enjoyable being outside for much of the time. It’s hard to motivate yourself to get your gloves on and get covered in soil on the best of days.

Now that warmer and brighter weather has finally descended on England I’ve been venturing into the greenhouse a bit more often. I have some tomatoes that are coming along nicely, my first tiny little ‘tom’ was spotted dangling from a vine this morning. I’ve also got some cucumbers that seem to be looking quite healthy, which is good.

My herb garden isn’t doing too badly either. I have some dill and parsley that are doing well and a little bit of thyme also. It might be getting late in the year to be sticking things in the in the ground but getting something growing is better than nothing.

The Garden Calls

As Winter slowly fades and Spring will surely follow, my garden will be calling to me shortly. Whilst it’s still cold outside (it’s not that long since we had snow) the hours of daylight are increasing and my greenhouse will need to be cleaned out. I can probably put it off for a little longer but soon I’ll have to knuckle down to it.

Down at the Bottom of the Garden

Now that I am the proud owner of a greenhouse, I am going to make it my mission for this year to actually grow a few things in it.  The weather has been atrociously cold lately but I think Winter is gradually starting to fade away and (according to some of the seeds I’ve bought) I can start to get planting.

I’ve got a table along one side to work on, where I have laid out my seeds trays.  I’ve got about a dozen of them, in various sizes containing (amongst other things) cucumbers, tomatoes and sweet corn.  On the opposite side of the greenhouse I’ve cleared a space for three large buckets that will be used to grow potatoes and to transplant the tomatoes once they’ve started to show signs of growth.

I suppose the greenhouse will become my little ‘man-cave’ but I quite enjoy getting my wellies on and trotting out there with my gardening gloves on and a flask of coffee in case I need to be refuelled.  I think I’ll treat myself to a pocket DAB radio soon, just so that I can listen to the BBC World Service whilst I’m in there.  There’s something very therapeutic about the whole thing but having someone talking to you stops it from feeling like such a solitary pursuit.

Normally I don’t make New Year’s Resolutions, but I thought I’d write a few down this time and see if I manage to stick to any of them. No.1) As with most of the Western hemisphere, I too will intend to do more and eat less over the next 12 months. No.2) I’m going to try not to take up more new hobbies than I have time to support. No.3) An end to impulse buying, so Amazon’s One-Click Purchasing will be switched off. No.4) Knit more. I have my loom, needles and hooks – I have no excuses. No.5) Enjoy the garden! I’ve got a greenhouse and hopefully I can grow some green thumbs this year. None of these require too much self discipline, so I’m (fairly) optimistic I can keep these.
