Tony the Toe Sock

I was given a pair of bright, stripy toe-socks the other day by someone at work.  I’m not normally a fan of toe socks myself, since I have big toes they never fit properly.  However, these socks were never destined to be worn, they had a far higher purpose – to be sock monsters.  I wanted to be quite economical and make a whole monster out of each sock, even though most of the books I’ve read recommend that the toes alone be kept to make mohawks or wings.  As such I took the basic pattern that I made Hoth with and with a few modifications, I was able to make Tony.  He’s very evenly proportioned, even though he does have one eye larger than the other.  His mouth is cut from felt, which gives him a similar expression to Pascal, Dook and Bo.  I’ve still got the other sock spare, so my next trick will probably be to create a one-sock pattern that looks similar but not identical to Tony.

The Way To Do It

i’ve been doing some preliminary doodles in my sketch book for the first character in my Punch and Judy set; Mr. Punch himself. I’ve started with the same pattern I used for Mr. Skelly but it’s going to need quite a few modifications. I’ll need seperate pieces for the body, the head, the chin and the nose. The clothes and any other additional features will be applied last. I’ve got some skin coloured felt for his face and chin, but I’m in two minds as to how red to make his nose. I have some deep pink felt that’s red-ish like a nose but not red like his clothes. I think this would be more effective than just using the same tone as the rest of his face. Maybe when I start cutting out shapes it’ll seem clearer to me.

Count, Dook. Ooh?

Over the weekend I finished my third ‘Harry’ monster. He’s a green, wedge shape with big Popeye arms and little stumpy legs. His eyes are pale green buttons and his mouth is a square of felt. His name is Dook and he looks a little bit like Dan Dare’s nemesis The Mekon. Not sure this monster is hell bent on galactic domination, but I’ll keep an eye on him just in case. I popped down to the market today to pick up some skin coloured felt for when I start my Punch and Judy set. Since there wil be more people than monsters I think I’ll need plenty of it.

Doodle Bug

I’ve taken my notepad and pencil out with me today, so I’m going to do some sketching and work on a few designs for my Punch and Judy set. I’ll start with the main characters, Mr. P and his wife, Toby the Dog, The Policeman etc. If things go well, I’ll branch out into the characters that often get missed out from modern versions of the story like The Hangman and The Devil. There should be plenty of scope for experimentation and elaboration, so I’m looking forward to it. I’m still going to make one more ‘Harry’ monster – I’ve cut out a template, I just need to cut out the shape from a felt square next. Not sure what colour to use, but if the last two were bright orange and purple, then perhaps a green monster would round off the group nicely? A bit like The Hulk joining The Avengers…

Monster Club

My house is starting to fill up with monsters now, I’m going to have to find somewhere for them all to live. I could put up a shelf and line them up along it. That would look nice, but I would run out of space very quickly. At the moment the sock monsters live in a big bag and the felt monsters are inside a hat. I’ll probably use something like a big laundry bin, it’ll have enough room for lots of monsters and to be honest, the ones made from sock pieces will be used to it.

Doodles

Taking my notebook around with me has proven to be quite useful. I did some rough sketches for templates and last night I picked my favourites, which I’ll make into monsters. The first one I’ve started on is a square shaped character with short, wide feet like a Womble but no arms. His body will be made of orange felt, but I’m not sure which buttons to use for eyes. I do have some proper googlie eyes that I could use, but I like the way buttons create more personality. They give a more ‘homemade’ look as they’re not really eyes but the way they’re placed makes your imagination see them as eyes. I’ve got plenty of chunky round buttons but something makes me think that square ones would work even better. I’m not sure, but I’ll rummage around the bottom of my sewing box and see what I can find.

Harry and Chums

Thumbing through my patterns, I’ve found a very simple one for a character called “Harry.” It’s pretty flexible so I should be able to make a few different versions. I’ve got my Moleskine notebook with me, so I can do some doodles before I pick a particular design. I’ve got an idea to make a little family of these, so I’m looking forward to this project. I might need to get some more felt squares because the ones I’ve got are more ‘Autumn’ colours and I think these should be much brighter.
