News Of The World

Like an ever increasing number of people, I don’t buy a daily newspaper. Between the internet, 24 hr news channels and mobile apps, I don’t really have the need to thumb through the same stories in a paper-based format.

Online I tend to gravitate towards the BBC. If I’m on holiday the World Service is pretty essential, though France 24 will do admirably well as an alternative. I use the Sky and CNN mobile apps, the latter being great for international breaking news.

I read The Spectator on my Kindle for some broader commentary, which is also very reasonably priced in its electronic format. I will also flick through The Metro on the bus/train whenever I see it, but then it does have the best cartoons 🙂

Formulaic

As the new F1 season approaches I find myself completely unmoved, as I do every season. That’s not to say that I’m anti-F1 in the way that some people are passionately anti-football. F1 just holds no interest for me. I do enjoy some motor sports, like the World Rally Championship and TT Road Racing but not F1.

Also, here in the UK I’m one of the few people not angry that the television rights are being shared between the BBC and Sky. I don’t think the publicly funded BBC has any business trying to compete with premium sports networks. It’s not an effective use of its limited budget, no matter how popular certain sports are. I get the impression that I hold a minority view about this too.

Time for a Gong

I didn’t watch The Brit Awards this year, in fact it’s several years since I watched the coverage on TV. Maybe I’ve now got to that age where popular music just washes over me, because it’s not aimed at me any more? Maybe I’ve just got cynical about industry award shows and inter-celebrity back patting? Maybe there’s just something more interesting over on BBC4?

Being Humanist

I’ve been following the BBC TV show Being Human since the original pilot. It survived having two thirds of its lead cast changed before it went into full production, so there’s no reason why it can’t do it again in the new fourth series. Whether the storylines have strayed too far from their sit-com roots, who can say? But if I wanted angst and brooding, shirtless men I’d watch True Blood.
