After a few days at sea, I am once again in Helsinki. The Silja Symphony has acted as a home-from-home, and thanks to some mostly pleasant weather, a good one it has been.
The tall, elaborate buildings of Stockholm’s Old Town are fantastic to witness and they draw armies of tourists, with their huge telephoto lenses and their inconsistent understanding of queues. However, after hours of seeing the sights, raiding the sweet shops and enjoying the bars/cafes it was eventually time to board the ship and return to Finland.
The journey back was probably better than the outward trip. Maybe it was the tax free shopping on board, maybe it was the delicious meatballs and berries I ate or perhaps it was just seeing Helsinki’s bright white cathedral emerge on the horizon in the morning. The truth is likely to be a mixture of them all.
